Franklin Monroe girls basketball team looks to build off last year’s success

PITSBURG – The Franklin Monroe Lady Jets were one of the youngest basketball teams in the Cross County Conference in 2016-17 with four freshmen seeing action during the season.

The young team may have flown under the radar but grew up quickly, finishing 8-4 in the league and 14-10 overall.

The Jets will once again be one of the youngest teams in the conference for the 2017-18 season, but the freshmen are now sophomores, have gained valuable experience and won’t be flying under the radar this year.

Leading the Jets is former FM sharpshooter Abbey (Davenport) Moore, who was named the CCC coach of the year in 2016-17.

Her young squad will be looking to take a step forward this year with the ultimate goal of earning a league title. Assisting Moore is Brandy Fourman, who was a standout basketball player in her own right.

Returning for action this year is 5-foot 10-inch sophomore Corina Conley, who was a first team all-conference selection last year. Conley led the Jets in four categories, averaging 13.7 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 1.9 blocked shots per game.

Audrey Cable is a 5-foot 7-inch sophomore and was a second team all-conference selection, averaging 9.3 points a game while dishing 3.1 assist per game.

Belle Cable is a 5-foot 3-inch sophomore and was a special mention all-conference performer while contributing 9.3 points per game.

Kennedy Morris is a 5-foot 8-inch junior who added 4.1 points and 3.5 rebounds a game.

Rounding out the varsity roster are sophomores Chloe Brumbaugh, Chloe Peters and senior Tara Goubeaux.

The Jets will look to push the tempo and want to play a fast-paced game.

“We will use our aggressiveness on the defensive end to get easier opportunities on the offensive end,” Coach Moore stated.

“Our competitive attitude enables us to compete at a high level during games and drives our athletes to compete at a high level every day we step on the court,” Moore added.

“As a coaching staff, it is our goal to challenge and motivate our athletes to always bring their best effort in and out of the gym.

“I believe the battle for the CCC title this year will be a heated one. I feel there are many teams who can be in contention for the title this season. We respect every CCC opponent we face, and we must come out and play our best basketball to be in a position at the end of the season to claim the title.

“We are ready for the challenge!” Moore concluded.

Franklin Monroe remains a young team but gained a lot of valuable experience last season.
