Versailles girls bowling team finishes 7th at Kick-Off Classic

COLUMBUS – The Versailles varsity girls bowling team competed in the Kick-Off Classic on Saturday in Columbus.

This is an invitation-only tournament for which the Versailles team has been invited for the last six years.

“We travel to Columbus to compete against 32 teams combining Division I and II,” Coach Tyler Phlipot said. “This gives us a great opportunity to compete at a high level on more difficult lane patterns.”

The format of the tournament included three standard games followed by two baker games with a cut to the top 16 and then match play following.

The Versailles team scores were 840, 822, and 789. Baker game scores for the Tigers were 177 and 159. The total score prior to the cut was 2,787, placing the Tigers at ninth.

After a lunch break, Versailles faced Coldwater and beat the Cavaliers in match play 3-1 (182-184, 164-146, 164-144, 168-157.

Although there were not many strikes marked on the board during this battle the Tigers were able to pick up spares. They worked well together as a team.

In the second round of match play Versailles competed against Gahanna Lincoln, falling in three games (174-177, 134-192, 157-186). The girls threw great shots.

At the end of the day the top six teams included five Division I schools and one Division II team.

Individual scores for the Tigers were: Lindsey Cheadle (156, 160, 187; 503 total and 45th place overall), Morgan Heitkamp (146, 193, 148; 487 total and 55th place), Makenzie Berning (172, 158, 156; 486 total and 58th place), Morgan Barlage (169, 149, 152; 479 total and 67th place), Haddi Treon (197, 162) and Jena Mangen subbed in for the third game and combined with Treon for 146.

Final team standings were Troy, Gahanna Lincoln, St Marys, Wapakoneta, Kettering Fairmont, Centerville, Versailles, Fairport Harding, Hillsboro, Coldwater, Perry, Howland, Xenia, Vandalia Butler, Perkins and Lima Shawnee.

The next match for the Tigers is Friday at McBos Lanes against Troy. Troy was the winner of the Kick-Off Tournament. The Versailles girls also have a match on Saturday against Ansonia at Speedway Lanes in New Bremen.
