VERSAILLES – Arcanum senior Haleigh Shaffer fired an 18-hole round of 94 on Thursday at Stillwater Valley Golf Club to win the Cross County Conference girls golf individual championship.

Shaffer shot a 43 on the front nine and a 51 on the back nine for her 94, beating Miami East senior Kiera Fellers by four strokes to win the conference championship.

“She’s been a solid senior all year,” Arcanum girls golf coach Andrew Bryant said. “She’s played pretty quality golf all year long. The most exciting thing about Haleigh is she’s always got an upbeat attitude. I think the last two or three or four holes she comes in strong every time for us, and that’s how she gets a big score. I really appreciate her. She’s being a great leader. I’m fired up for her for her senior year being able to win.”

Led by Shaffer, Arcanum finished as the conference runner up behind Miami East. The Vikings shot a 414 while the Trojans shot a 425. Covington finished third in the league with a 499, Tri-Village finished fourth with a 499, and Franklin Monroe finished fifth with a 597.

Arcanum finishing as the conference runner up was awesome, Bryant said, and a great tone setter for the upcoming Ohio High School Athletic Association sectional tournament.

“This is my first year coaching girls golf so I didn’t know what to expect. But, man, my expectations have been exceeded with this group of girls. It’s been great,” he said. “We’re really excited about building off of this.”

Arcanum junior Franchesca Hackworth won a tiebreaker to finish fifth individually in the conference tournament. After tying Miami East senior Maggie Bergman and Tri-Village junior Emma Campbell through 18 holes, Hackworth beat both girls in a playoff on hole No. 9.

“She hits a great chip and makes a great putt there at the end and wins the playoff,” Bryant said. “She’s been our solid person all year with just excitement and encouragement and she’s a hard worker.”

Along with Shaffer and Hackworth, Arcanum junior Madi O’Daniel shot a 110, freshman Lexi Unger shot a 112, junior Brenna Loxley shot a 132, and junior Chloe Price shot a 141.

Campbell led Tri-Village with her round of 109. Also for the Lady Patriots, senior Jenna Coffman shot a 113, junior Kina Hill shot a 131, freshman Julia Mellott shot a 146, and junior Becky O’Connor shot a 147.

Senior Kalin McCabe led Franklin Monroe with a round of 130. Also for the Lady Jets, junior Lacy Henninger shot a 152, junior Danielle Nestor shot a 153, sophomore Shelby Rock shot a 162, junior Chelsi Edger shot a 164, and sophomore Grace Fee shot a 168.
