Guillozet, Heitkamp named athletes of the week

DARKE COUNTY – A pair of athletes who came up big to help their teams get victories on the road are this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Greenville football player Clay Guillozet and Versailles girls golf Lauren Heitkamp.

Guillozet had a big game in a Greenville win at Preble Shawnee in week three. He threw for 58 yards in a rainy game and ran for 245 yards with touchdown runs of 80 and 49 yards. He also made a pair of tackles.

“We were able to grind it out, and when you get into a game like this, at the end of the game if you can get the lead and run the clock out that’s huge,” Greenville football coach Aaron Shaffer said.

Through three weeks Guillozet has thrown for 335 yards and three touchdowns while only throwing one interception to help guide the Green Wave to a 2-1 record. The senior also leads the team with 415 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. He even caught one pass for 8 yards.

Heitkamp tied a program record in a win against Parkway on Tuesday and helped the Lady Tigers tie a team record in the same match. The junior shot a nine-hole round of 38 at Deerfield Golf Course to tie the program record for best score in an away match. The Tigers shot a 168 in the match to tie the program record for team score in an away match.”

“Lauren currently has a nine-hole average of 46, but she has really come on as of late,” Versailles girls golf coach Joe Harrmann said. “She has been in the 30s two times over the past week.”

Heitkamp has improved a lot this season, Harrmann said, because of her hard work.

“Lauren has shown true dedication to the game over the past season, and she has really worked hard to improve herself as an individual and a direct correlation is the improvement of the overall team score,” Harrmann said. “Lauren has been extremely coachable, always seeking advice and working on her game.”

Heitkamp helped lead the Tigers to the Midwest Athletic Conference championship last season, and she and the rest of the Tigers are in position to contend for the league title again this year.

“In my opinion one of Lauren’s strongest attributes is her ability to focus and to stay level headed,” Harrmann said. “I don’t see her get too rattled or too excited. She’s never too high nor is she ever too low. I think most coaches in any sport would agree that being even keeled and having a calm presence, staying cool under pressure, will always produce a quality athlete if they have some skill and ability to go along with it. While she is calm, cool and collected, she certainly doesn’t lack fire and enthusiasm for the game and her team. She is a Tiger through and through, and we are certainly happy she is part of our team and school.”
