Greenville track and field teams beat Piqua in Jennings Center Track and Field Complex opener

GREENVILLE – Greenville officially opened its Jennings Center Track and Field Complex on Wednesday with the Green Wave high school and junior high teams sweeping Piqua in a dual meet.

Greenville previously canceled two home meets and what was supposed to be the ribbon cutting for the Jennings Center Track and Field Complex because of weather-related schedule changes, but Wednesday allowed the Wave to finally host a home meet.

“It’s awesome,” Greenville track and field coach Bill Plessinger said. “We’ve been practicing in it. We’ve been waiting for it. I was joking with Emma Jennings’ mom, like what is going to happen to the weather today? But we finally have a nice day. It’s been the nicest day of the year, actually. Both of the meets we’ve run in have been in the 40s. The kids have been dying to get to run here. Obviously we practice here all the time. We’re all excited. I’m more excited about the weather. I think we’d run in Timbuktu right now if it’s above 50 degrees.”

The project began three-and-a-half years ago with Greenville alumni Matt Light and Jon McGreevey seeking to improve Greenville City Schools’ athletics facilities. Friends of Harmon Field was created to lead the efforts with Dave Ernst, Dustin Leis, Mike Henderson, Aaron Shaffer, Ron Holzapfel, Marv Stammen, Jim Poeppelman, John Swallow, Jeff Kniese, Dusty Yingst, Mike Stegall, Larry Ullery, Kyle Kagey, Carla Surber and Rob Winner leading the committee.

Numerous individuals, families and businesses contributed to the project with Greenville alumnus Brad Jennings and his family donating $800,000 for the track and field complex.

“The best part is when we go to other places now when we used to go to other places and everybody was better than ours now we’re better than everybody,” Plessinger said. “It’s a complete mental … it’s amazing. Now we go to Troy and now we go to these places and like, ‘God, this track is awful.’ Where before we loved it because it was so much better than what we had, but now ours is better than what they have.”

Greenville has completed the first two phases of its athletics upgrades, but the school still plans to add an athletics complex between Harmon Field and the Jennings Center Track and Field Complex and upgrade the stadium and lighting at Harmon Field.
