MARIA STEIN – Marion Local showed why they are highly ranked in the state in football, beating Versailles 49-14 Friday night.

While the Tigers were beaten, they managed to do something no team has done this year. The Tigers scored in the second half. Versailles was the first team this year to score in the second half of a game.

The Flyers wasted little time putting points on the board. Starting at their 40-yard line, a pass from Nathan Bruns to Nick Tangeman went 60 yards to pay dirt. The score was the first of three for Tangeman, who had 172 yards receiving.

The Tigers would close to 7-6 with 6:15 left in the first with a 31-yard run by quarterback Ryan Martin. The Tiger drive started on the Flyer 38 as the Tiger defense held the Flyers on fourth down to take possession of the ball.

The Flyers would score the next 35 points of the first half. The Flyers scored on a 67-yard pass and an 8-yard run in the first quarter. The second quarter scores were a 13-yard pass and two 2-yard runs. The Flyers were perfect on their extra points and took a 42-7 lead into the half.

The second half began with a running clock. The Tigers were deep in Flyer territory after a turnover. Andrew DeMange made a one-handed catch at the 9-yard line for a first and goal. The Tigers fumbled at the 5 to give the ball back to the Flyers.

Nolan Habodasz scampered through the Tiger defense 95 yards for a touchdown. With the Flyers up 49-7 they started substituting players in.

The Tigers put together a final drive capped with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Andrew DeMange. Jared Seibert scored on the two-point conversion to make the score 49-14. Both teams subbed in players in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers host New Bremen next Friday night. The Cardinals are 4-3 on the season and currently sit in seventh place in computer rankings.
