Versailles downs Blue Jays

DELPHOS – The Versailles football team used defense to pull out a 25-14 victory over the St. John’s Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers trailed 14-12 at the half, but shut out the Blue Jays in the second half to pull out the win.

The Tigers opened up the scoring on their second possession with a pass from Ryan Martin to Michael Stammen. Stammen played less in the second half.

“Not having Michael hurt a little bit.” Coach Jones said “We were able to get Jack Osborne and Landon Henry in the game and they made some good plays.”

The extra point was blocked but the Tigers had a 6-0 lead. The Jays took less than two minutes to answer back. The Jays were aided by a kick return to the Versailles 40 yard line. The Jays scored on a 21-yard run, made the extra point and took a 7-6 lead.

The Tigers Would score on their next possession to retake the lead. Jack Osborne had a 40 yard run to take the ball to the Jay 39-yard line. Martin ran a keeper to the 23-yard line. On a first down at the one, Martin put it over and the Tigers took a 12-7 lead. Once again the extra point was blocked.

The Blue Jays answered back with 5:58 left in the first half. The Tiger defense looked to have the Jays stopped with a fourth down at the Tigers 37. A 36-yard pass set them up with a first and goal from the one yard line. The Jays put it on from one yard out and took a 14-12 lead. The Blue Jays attempted a field goal before the end of the half, but it went wide right.

The second half belonged to the Tigers as they outscored the Jays 13-0 in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

“Defense did a great job in the second half again.” Coach Jones said “I thought we came out a little flat, I think we stepped up our intensity in the second half.”

Landon Henry had a 31-yard touchdown run with 8:26 left as the Tigers took an 18-14 lead. The Tigers went for two, but it was stopped short.

Osborne sealed the win with 57 seconds left with a 20 yard run. The extra point kick was good. The Jays drove down inside the Tiger five as time expired.

The win puts the Tigers at 3-2 on the season and a two game winning streak. The Tigers will face Anna next week on homecoming weekend.
