Ansonia’s Stammen wins county spelling bee

NEW MADISON — Reece Stammen, a seventh-grader at Ansonia Middle School, won the district competition spelling bee Thursday morning at Tri-Village Local School District.

The son of Jay and Deidre Stammen, he out-spelled 12 other students to become champion. The winning word was frequently.

Second place in the event went to Tori Tyo, a fourth-grade student at Versailles Elementary and daughter of Deb and Tim Tyo, who was eliminated on the word modular.

Because two other spellers went out in the same round prior to the final event, they had to compete for third place. Charlie Rippee, an Arcanum Middle School student, won that round against Aiden Collins, a student at Tri-Village Junior High, who was eliminated on the word jargon. Charlie is the son of Brenda and Chuck Rippee.

According to Tim Nealeigh, who pronounced the words to the students, the spelling bee went 93 rounds before the winner was decided. Other words erroneously spelled in the competition were measly, nurture, trellis, moxie, catalog, pedigree, worrywart, calico, torrent, thigh and curries.

Additional spellers were: Rebekah Prasuhn of Ansonia Elementary; Liam Chadwick of Arcanum Elementary; Logan Daugherty of Bradford Elementary; Chris Lockhart of Bradford Junior High; Zoe Kellems of Franklin Monroe Elementary; Ethan Fee of Franklin Monroe Junior High; D.J. Steen of Mississinawa Valley Elementary; Arizona Adkins of Tri-Village Elementary; and Cayla Batten of Versailles Middle School.

April Wulber of the Darke County Educational Service Center served as moderator of the spelling bee. Prior to the county bee, she announced The Dayton Daily News, which has been sponsoring this event for many years will no longer be doing that. Thus, Darke County will not be sending anybody to regional competition in Dayton this year.

“This is the last stop on the Dayton Daily News spelling venture,” Wulber said. “So, we decided today we would have a spelling bowl with each school’s champions and runners-up with them competing in four rounds of 12 words. The school with the most correctly spelled words at the end will get a plaque.”

After all was said and done, the Arcanum students won the plaque. Chadwick, Rippee as well as alternates, Krystin Monroe and Aiden Psczulkosi received the plaque for their school.

The runners-up from the other schools included Rebecca Sanders of Ansonia Elementary; Daphne Kies of Ansonia Junior High; Maci Hauschild of Bradford Elementary; Devin Carine of Bradford Junior High; Sadie Bowser of Franklin Monroe Elementary; Nathaniel Davis of Franklin Monroe Junior High; JudahBen Winchester of Mississinawa Valley Elementary; Tristan Blankenship of Tri-Village Elementary; MeKenna Anderson of Tri-Village junior High; Paige Kremer of Versailles Elementary; and Jack Detrick of Versailles Middle School.

Wulber believes the county spelling be will be held next year, but couldn’t guarantee it.

“We’ll probably have one,” she said.

Elizabeth Rogers of Tri-Village coordinated the spelling bee, and Patty Bernard was roundkeeper. Judges were Angela McMurry and Bill Nellis.
