GREENVILLE — School construction, a state award and a proposed calender for the 2016-2017 school year were topics of discussion at the Greenville City Schools Board of Education meeting Thursday.
Bruce Miller of Garmann Miller & Associates, the firm overseeing construction of Greenville’s new K-8 building on Ohio Street, reported to the board that the project remains on schedule for a Nov. 15, 2016, completion.
According to Miller, the school still retains approximately $1.1 million in contingencies.
Miller reported that only two bid packages remain for the project — one for loose furniture ($1.636 million) and the other for technology equipment ($1.6 million). He said the firm has finished the bid documents and forwarded them on to Shook Touchstone for bidding. These contracts should be awarded by the beginning of April.
Garmann Miller will then proceed with demolition and abatement plans for the old elementary schools.
“The project’s in pretty good shape right now. The contractors seem to be doing a nice job out in the field. I’ve been real happy with the mechanicals and the electrical,” he said.
Construction Administrator Bill Painter gave the board updates on where construction currently stands. He reported the roof is about 80 percent complete on the elementary portion of the complex, the geothermal system is finished and that windows will be delivered in late March. Drywall and painting has already begun in portions of the school.
Site Designer Sheara Elder updated the board on the status of the new building’s playground areas, including plans for moving existing playground equipment from Woodland Primary to the new site.
Greenville Superintendent Doug Fries announced that Treasurer Carla Surber and her department had earned an Auditor of State Award with Distinction. The award was given in recognition for the district’s excellent record keeping.
The representative from the State Auditor’s Office was unable to attend the Thursday night meeting, but will be on hand to present the award at a future date.
The board received a proposal for the 2016-2017 school year calender. According to the proposal, the school will open for students August 29. The Christmas break will be longer than usual, running from December 17 to January 11, as the district prepares for occupancy at the new K-8 building. The school year is slated to end on June 7.
The board is expected to vote on a finalized schedule at its next meeting.
The school will receive $10,105.31 as part of a settlement agreement between the Southwestern Ohio Education Purchasing Council and Reiter Dairy.
Upon receiving word that the schools had received more than $1,500 from the General Mills Box Tops for Education program, Board President Fred Matix encouraged the community to keep saving the Box Tops for Education labels.
“That’s $1,500. If we could just get people in the community, even if they don’t have any children to drop them off at Woodland [Primary] or South [Middle School], we’d greatly appreciate it,” he said.
In other business, the board approved the purchase of a new Cardinal 72-passenger school bus at a cost of $80,500.
The board also approved a $13,135.54 payment to Bolyard Heating & Cooling for emergency repairs of the boiler at South Middle School.
The board approved the Greenville High School Class of 2016 for graduation and approved the resignation of NJROTC instructor Keith Denman as well as the hiring of Richard T. Kuehner for the same position.
