VERSAILLES – The people of Versailles didn’t have to live with a blank space where Z’s used to be for very long. Stepping in to fill the gap were Allen Platfoot and his sister, Kathryn Wespiser, who have opened Platty’s Sports Bar & Grille.
It was a serendipitous find.
“I love to cater,” Wespiser said. “And I was doing a lot of catering. I needed a place to house that business.”
She and her brother looked at a lot of buildings, and when Z’s building became available, it was the right fit for their needs.
“We got the keys on Feb. 1,” Wespiser said. “We went in and did some cleaning and fixing up, upgraded some equipment and it was ready to go.”
By early March, the employees were testing the waters with a soft opening that turned into a flood of customers. By the time the grand opening on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, rolled around, the place was already well on its way to being a local fixture.
“Business has been exceptional,” Platfoot said. “It is unbelievably good right now. I am very satisfied with how things are going.”
The bar/restaurant has 94 seats and is a family-friendly environment. Though it’s billed as a sports bar, it’s a step above what most people might expect in terms of quality.
“This is a fresh-food establishment,” Wespiser said. “Everything we do is from scratch.”
Featured foods include hand-cut portobello mushrooms, Reubens and Philly steak sandwiches, fresh handmade burgers and specialty pizzas, such as the Reuben, Hawaiian and very popular mac and cheese pizza.
The pizzas are all fresh, thinner crust style, and a gluten-free 12-inch crust is also available.
The menu also includes hand-cut fries, chicken chunks and tenders with a variety of homemade sauces. There is a daily lunch special, as well.
“Almost all of our sauces and dressings are homemade,” Wespiser said. “The idea is to know what all the ingredients are.”
“We get a lot of compliments on our food,” Platfood added.
The establishment currently has seven large-screen TVs, as well as a pool table and a bowling machine. The bar has all the usual major brews as well as a good variety of craft beers available, as well as wines and liquors.
“It’s a sports bar and grill, but anyone’s welcome here, from newborns on up,” Wespiser said.
The bar is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Tuesday is closed. The kitchen is open until 9 p.m. on weeknights and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
