UNION CITY, Ind. — Named 2015’s Farmer of the Year at the kick-off luncheon for State Line Heritage Days (SLHD) on Wednesday was Kurt Prescott.

Prescott was presented the award from John Fraze, who traditionally hands out the award from year to year.

Prescott was born in 1962 to parents who started farming in 1954 in Jay County, Indiana, and, then in 1956, they brought their family back to Randolph County, where they have farmed since.

“The young man was always willing to work and learn all about farming,” said Sandy Hernandez as she was getting ready to introduce this year’s winner.”While he was in junior high, he wanted to play football but his dad needed him on the farm, so he quit to help his father. He was a senior in high school when he rented his first farm.”

That same farm he cash rented as a senior was just purchased by him in 2014.

In 1983, Prescott married wife Sherry and they have two children, Jordon and Megan.

With the help of son Jordon, they now farm more than 2,000 acres.

Kurt also took time to serve 16 1/2 years on the Randolph Eastern School Board, with his busy work load.

He also finds time to spend with his four grandchildren, Kayleigh, Crosby, Logan and Aden.

The luncheon also saw the presentation of a certificate of appreciation to Paul Hartzell “for all you’ve done” for State Line Heritage Days.

Hernandez emceed the program, and the mayors on both sides of the village — Bryan Conklin on the Indiana side and Scott Stahl on the Ohio side — led in the Pledge of Allegiance, while the invocation and benediction were given by the Rev. John Hannan.

Jana Bruggeman, SLDH chairman, introduced her committee and Pam Pratt talked about all of the SLHD events for this year’s festival.

State Line Heritage Days continues today and all day Saturday.
