VERSAILLES — Students at Versailles Exempted Village Schools will find 10 new staff members waiting for them when they return to classes on Aug. 31.

There will be five new members of the teaching staff. They are Mara Alexander, Title I and Reading Recovery Teacher; Susan Pallone, K-8 Intervention Specialist; Josh Schmitmeyer, Second Grade Teacher; Kelly Schwieterman, First Grade Teacher; and Zach Sudhoff, High School Intervention Specialist.

The five other new staffers are Jenna Meyer, Treasurer; Brenda Hale, Accounting Assistant; Michele Hyre, Food Service; Jodi Rethman, Food Service; and Bonnie Seger, Food Service.

There are several items on the calendar prior to school starting for some students as well.

Today from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., students and parents can stop by the school offices to pick up their folders and schedules for the new school year. From Aug. 19 to 26, pick-up will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in school offices.

At this time, emergency contact forms can also be updated, transportation information handed out, and lunch money deposits accepted. There are no book bills this year, so additional student fees will not be collected.

Today Janet Mendenhall will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria to collect lunch deposits and answer questions about lunch accounts.

Chromebook information nights for students in grades five through 12 will be tonight at 5 and 6 p.m. in the theater and Monday, Aug. 24 at 6 and 7. With the implementation of the technology 1-1 Program (Chromebooks) in grades 5-12, parents, guardians and students must attend one of the informational meetings for those who did not attend the earlier ones Aug. 11 or 17. The beginning of July, each family should have received the following letter in reference to Chromebooks. Please call 526-4773 if you have any questions.

Superintendent Aaron Moran said last year’s pilot program with the Chromebooks went very well, and the teachers who were part of the program last year are “very excited” to be expanding it this year. The school’s wi-fi network was enhanced last year to handle to much greater access the students will have this year.

Students entering kindergarten through fourth grade and their parents are invited to a Meet Your Teacher Night Thursday, Aug. 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gym.

The district has switched its call system back to One Call Now for the upcoming school year. This system will have the same features of phone calls, emails and texting for communications as before. In order to receive texts from the system, you will have to send the message ALERT to 22300 from your phone that must be part of your emergency contact information. As with the previous system, you can select what methods of communication you would like to receive your information: by phone, email, text or in any combination.

Moran said an item on tonight’s school board agenda will be discussion of possibly adding a part-time school resource officer through the Versailles Police Department. If the board approves, the resource officer would start at the beginning of this school year.
