New Madison News: Preparing for a universal event

0

The national news has become so dark with conspiracy theories, foreign intrigue and nuclear threats that it is refreshing to see a unification of interest in a universal experience that promises to be amazing——if Mother Nature doesn’t block our view. On August 21 the solar eclipse is coming and the internet and media have been preparing us for the event.

Lots of people are loading up the car and heading for a sighting with more impact——with spaces sold for parking. Better get an early start because traffic jams could throw a wrench in the travel plans.

Locally there will be a viewing at the New Madison Public Library at 2 p.m. Brenda Miller, director, planned in advance for the special event by ordering viewing glasses. The glasses are a necessity. Don’t look to the sky without protection! Maybe this can be a reminder that something bigger exists beyond greedy and dangerous. The library again has set up programming for a special event. Children, as well as adults, can gather and learn.

I recently read an interesting article concerning library relevancy. This particular article centered on libraries that have open doors and set tables for hungry children this summer. Far beyond the traditional description of a community library, these facilities welcome children needing a hot meal. With help from local sponsors, often churches, the library is the place children find comfort and nourishment for lunch and learning. And if you think it is not nearby, well this article was centered on a library in Cincinnati.

Locally our library has willingly helped with programs for free lunches by providing book time and reading adventures for youngsters at in New Madison and in Hollansburg. The article shows the importance of libraries in becoming community anchors with services and presentations for children and adults. Encourage governmental support of your libraries. These are not just places to check out books.

Enjoy the fair and the downside of summer. Enjoy the eclipse and hope for ”good news” as we check the media for morning updates.
