DARKE COUNTY — At its meeting Monday, the Darke County Board of Commissioners declared July 17 and 18 “Relay For Life Days.”

The proclamation recognizes the American Cancer Society’s signature event which raises money to fight cancer and encourages citizens to “help finish the fight” by participating.

This year’s Relay For Life, the 11th annual such event in Darke County, will be held at Heritage Park, 561 Woodland Drive, in Versailles.

The relay begins at 6 p.m. July 17 and runs to 9 a.m. the following morning.

Relay For Life Event Lead Rose Schlater said this year’s theme is “Be a Superhero — Save the World, One Cure at a Time.”

Though the event highlights cancer victims, cancer survivors, those currently fighting cancer, and cancer caregivers, the gathering is open for anyone who wishes to take part.

“Everyone is welcome,” she said. “It is open to the public.”

“Relay For Life raises money for a number of American Cancer Society programs,” Schlater added, “plus it provides funds for research and development.”

The organization hosts an overnight community fundraising walk, with teams of people camping out around a track. Team members take turns walking around the track throughout the course of the night and into the morning.

Other activities include food, games and entertainment for participants of all ages.

There will also be a luminaria ceremony at 9:45 p.m., in which candles are lit in honor of those who have died from cancer and those continuing the fight.

“Our motto is, ‘We don’t sleep because cancer doesn’t sleep,’” said Schlater.
