DARKE COUNTY – A pair of seniors who got their teams off to strong starts to the 2015 season are this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week.
This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Franklin Monroe volleyball player Morgan Booher and Versailles football player Collin Peters.
Booher, a four-year varsity starter, helped lead Franklin Monroe to the championship in the Cross County Conference Invitational last weekend with a 3-0 record.
“Morgan is one of our setters and is also our go-to hitter when she is in the front row,” Franklin Monroe volleyball coach Amy Booher said. “I know I can always count on Morgan to come through for us when we need to get a kill.”
Through the first four matches of the season Booher has recorded 53 kills, 43 assists, 23 digs and 13 aces.
Her strong start is just a continuation of her strong high school career as she already holds the Franklin Monroe record for most kills in a match. During the invitational she also set the school career assists record.
“Morgan is very quick to get to the ball and always hustles,” Coach Booher said. “Her season is starting out very well for her so far.”
Peters ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries in Versailles’ 28-7 victory against Celina to begin the season.
Peters, who ran for more than 1,000 yards during his junior season, kept his legs going and constantly fought for extra yards in this year’s season opener, Versailles football coach Adam Miller said.
“He had a great night,” Miller said. “Really ran the ball hard.”
Having moved up from Division VI to Division V this season, the non-conference win against Division III Celina was extremely important for the Tigers and their quest to return to the postseason this season, Miller said.
“We’ve got a pretty tight window to get in the playoffs,” he said.
