Council tables water rate hike

ARCANUM — At its Tuesday night meeting, the Arcanum Village Council temporarily tabled a proposed rate hike on water reconnection services.

Ordinance 2015-48 would have increased the charge from $50 to $100 for Arcanum residents seeking to have their water serviced by the village during “after hours” times or on weekends.

Council member Bonnie Millard questioned the wording of the ordinance, as to whether the increase represented a “trip charge” — in other words, questioning if residents would be charged $100 for each trip made by the village’s workers.

It was explained that the rate hike would indeed charge residents $100 for each trip, for village workers traveling both to and from the location.

The council decided to clarify the language of the ordinance at an upcoming meeting of the council’s Utilities Committee on September 14.

In other business, Village Administrator Col. Bill Sinnes informed council that the Darke County Chamber of Commerce will host a groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 18 at 9 a.m. to open the Harvest Fields residential housing development.

Sinnes also reported that his office was still awaiting contractor estimates for tree removal at the park, power line tree trimming, and repairs for the village’s street sweepers.

Council also passed the ordinances providing appropriations for the South Main Street Reconstruction Fund and the General, Street and Electric funds.

The Arcanum Village Council meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 104 West South Street. The 7 p.m. meetings are open to the public. For further information, visit the Arcanum website at www.villageofarcanum.com.
