ARCANUM – In a football game worthy of Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, the Arcanum-Miami East matchup was a shoot-out as the squads combined for 15 touchdowns and 102 total points.

Although the Trojans scored more points Friday against the Vikings than they did in their previous three games this season, it was not enough. In the end, the visiting Vikings prevailed with a 62-40 road victory as the Trojans fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the Cross County Conference.

“We played hard; the effort was there,” Trojan coach T.J. Powers said. “A made a few mistakes, and we couldn’t stop them.”

Sparked by quarterback Daniel O’Donnell and running back Brandon Kinney, the Trojans scored first midway in the first period on an 85-yard TD run by O’Donnell along the right sideline. O’Donnell gained 158 yards on 17 carries while Kinney tallied 167 on 18 carries.

Miami East responded with two first-quarter TDs for a 14-8 advantage.

Undaunted, the Trojans answered with two touchdowns for an 18-14 lead. The go-ahead TD was set up with an interception by defender Cole Burrell, giving the Trojans a short field and a short TD run by Kinney.

It was the last hurrah for the home team, however.

The Vikings tallied two second-quarter scores for a 28-18 halftime bulge. The spread swelled to 17 points at the start of the third quarter. From their own 33-yard line, the Vikings scored on two plays within 20 seconds, capped by 56-yard run by Logan Mays, who gained 224 yards in 13 carries.

Leading 35-18, the Vikings controlled the game by mixing the pass with the run for four more TDs and a 30-point advantage with 2:05 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Trailing 62-32, the resilient Trojans marched for 61 yards for a last-minuted TD on short run by Dan Coates.

Miami East improved to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the CCC.

“This was a dogfight tonight,” Viking coach Max Current said. “Like I said earlier, Arcanum is a dangerous team.”

Arcanum travels to Twin Valley South in West Alexandria on Friday.

Score by quarters:

Miami East 14 14 21 13 — 62
