Arcanum’s Justin Hoke narrowly misses qualifying for OHSAA state golf tournament

MIDDLETOWN – Arcanum senior Justin Hoke lost a playoff at districts Thursday, falling just short of qualifying for the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III boys golf state tournament.

Hoke shot an 18-hole round of 76 at the district tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course to tie Seven Hills junior Jack Lane and Fort Loramie junior Brad Gottemoeller for third place overall. The trio then played a playoff for the final individual qualifying spot at state, which Lane won to earn the spot at the state meet.

As a team Arcanum shot a 343 to finish fifth out of 12 teams. The Trojans were six strokes out of state-qualifying position. Tri-Village finished 11th with a 369.

Mechanicsburg won the district tournament with a score of 335 and qualified for state along with Southeastern, who shot a 337 to finish as the runner up.

Seven Hills finished third with a 341, Newton finished fourth with a 341, Arcanum finished fifth with its 343, Russia finished sixth with a 346, Catholic Central finished seventh with a 349, Fort Loramie finished eighth with a 350, Cincinnati Country Day finished ninth with a 351, Cincinnati Christian finished 10th with a 351, Tri-Village finished 11th with its 369, and Fairlawn finished 12th with a 377.

Hoke led Arcanum with his round of 76. Also for the Trojans, senior Conner Pohl finished ninth with a round of 81, junior Steven Vanatta finished 30th with an 87, senior Sam Artz finished 63rd with a 99, and senior Nate Kubik finished 67th with a 103.

Senior Knox Morris led Tri-Village with a round of 84 as he finished 21st overall. Also for the Patriots, junior Luke Wheeler finished 28th with an 86, senior Brett Boyter finished 44th with a 92, senior Brandon Peters finished 71st with a 107, and senior Tyler VanWinkle finished 72nd with a 109.

Competing individually Mississinawa Valley senior Josh Rehmert finished 30th overall with a round of 87 while Bradford junior Alex Swabb finished 65th with a 102.

Southeastern sophomore Avery Green and Newton senior Brock Jamison tied for medalist honors as they both shot a 73. Jamison and Lane qualified for state as individuals.
