The unseasonably warm temps of early November are greatly appreciated. The weather cooperated in lawn care and made the storage of summer furniture a much nicer task. Even the Bengal football game was warm and set the great backdrop for a super clash of Ohio’s two professional football teams. Well, not so much a clash! Needless to say the two men in my immediate family are excited with the Bengal march to a super season.
The rest of the month looks to be cooler and damp but there is plenty to keep November interesting.
One dissected question will be quarterbacking at Ohio State. Our Buckeyes keep fans “tuned in” for the next episode of “who” and “why.” Football is a big topic in Ohio this November!
Time for all of those election signs to come down. Congratulations to winners. Now we can just listen to the rhetoric of candidates who want signs up for the next election cycle!
This is the month to honor our veterans. We reflect on the service and sacrifices that allow us to enjoy fall activities and free elections. My nephew is visiting in Germany and he asked for information on his grandfather’s time in World War 2. It had me thinking about my father and how I grew up knowing that we didn’t talk about that time and we never went to the fireworks displays when I was a child. It is easy to take our freedoms for granted but it is important to never fail to acknowledge personal pain and time spent in preserving our national heritage.
The American Legion will sponsor its annual flag burning ceremony on Wednesday. If you have a tattered or marred flag, you can take it to the service for a dignified disposal. The service is followed by a bean supper and the community is invited.
This coming weekend will bring the Harvest Supper at the Methodist Church. Turkey and ham will be served and there will be oyster dressing available. Add potatoes and green beans with an assortment of home made salads and desserts to beckon the community to enjoy this meal. A free will offering will be taken and you can order take out.
Adult programming at the New Madison Public Library is set for the last Tuesday night of the month. The discussion will focus on providing a senior citizens center in Darke County. Lindsey Gahret and the senior outreach committee will present a program entitled “If you build it—-Creating a Senior Center in Darke County.” You can learn details and ask questions about the potential of providing a welcoming site for seniors. You can have some input in the planning. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. You are very welcome to attend.
