ARCANUM – It was a time of remembrance and celebration on Dec. 19 as the Arcanum-Butler Schools welcomed back several of their championship teams of the past on Champions Night.
They begin honoring a team once it has celebrated its 15-year anniversary.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary is the 1956 boys basketball team that won the state championship. In compiling a 27-1 record the team won the county, district and regional titles along the way. In the state semis the Trojans defeated Columbus St. Mary’s and then Wilshire in the finals to bring the championship home to Arcanum.
Surviving team members include Marvin Engle, David Fourman, Ron Puterbaugh, Bob Scheiding and Fred Troutwine. Also on the team were Rex Karns, Lonnie Norris, Terry Norris, Dick O’Dell, Bob Shahan, head coach Glen Harter, assistant coach Don Bodewisch, assistant coach Richard Graeff and manager Terry Swoveland.
The 1976 boys basketball team was being honored for its 40th year anniversary. This team was one of the better in Arcanum history. The squad posted a perfect regular season at 19-0 and its only loss came in the state semifinals. Their overall record ended at 25-1.
Surviving team members include Terrance Fourman, Russell Harrison, Thomas Karn, Warren O’Connor, Kevin O’Dell, Larry Snyder, Mike Swank, Jeff Wright and assistant coach John Hennemyer. Also on the team were William Ellison, Brent Karns, Ken Sebring and head coach Richard Graeff.
Thirty-five years ago in 1981 Lady Trojan athletics had an outstanding year. The basketball team, coached by the late Larry Patrick and Mark Wiseman, finished the year with an 18-3 record and winning the Cross County Conference championship. They did not slow down in the spring as the softball team, led by Coach Patrick, and track team, coached by Ruth Macklin, both brought home league titles.
In 1986 the baseball team had a tremendous season. Coach Mark Wiseman directed the team to a 19-1 regular season campaign that secured a conference championship. The team captured the district title before losing in the regionals. Team members include Kevin Malone, Mark Wetzel, Tim Gunkel, Chad Bruner, Dane French, Mark Garbig, Mike Powell, John Troutwine, Shawn Hein, Doug Garno, John Saunders, Donnie Baker and coach Mark Wiseman.
The final team honored was the 2001 girls softball team. This team compiled a 25-3 record that included winning the CCC championship, sectional, district and regional crowns before ending their season at the state semifinals. Members of this team include Casey Bingham-Miller, Sarah Moore-Baker, Jennifer Flatter, Crystal Jenkins-McGlothlin, Jennifer Dornbusch-Hemmerich, Emily Strayer-Otto, Amie Brown-Eldred, Becky Ignaffo-Borowske, Ami Anthony, Sara Pitzer-Romer, Heather Short, Billie Jo Lawson-Young, Sheena Rothwell, Leann Sando-Perry, assistant coach Mike Flatter, assistant coach Jack Kinninger and head coach Kelly Kramer.
