GOP’s Portman nears $10M raised in US Senate re-election bid

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – U.S. Sen. Rob Portman’s re-election campaign reports that the Cincinnati Republican set an off-year record in state fundraising, collecting nearly $10 million in donations during 2015.

Figures being released Wednesday showed Portman raised $2.1 million in the fourth quarter. That brought his total for the year to $9.8 million. He has well over $12 million on hand, giving him a campaign war chest larger than many presidential candidates.

According to the campaign, just over three-fourths of Portman’s 8,700 donors during the year were Ohioans.

Portman faces a likely challenge in November from former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a well-known Democrat viewed as one of the party’s top prospects nationally to win a Republican-held seat. Strickland would first have to defeat Cincinnati councilman P.G. Sittenfeld in the Democratic primary March 15.
