Greenville softball player Sydney Grote throws a no-hitter vs. Milton-Union

GREENVILLE – Sydney Grote threw a no-hitter as the Greenville softball team began the 2016 season with a pair of wins on Saturday, defeating Wayne 7-4 and Milton-Union 11-1.

In the season opener against Wayne Greenville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After Wayne tied the game in the third, Greenville regained the lead with three runs in the fourth and added two more in the fifth to lead 6-1. Wayne scored three runs in the top of the sixth, and Greenville finished off the scoring with a final run in the bottom half of the inning for the 7-4 victory.

Greenville had 10 hits and four errors in the game while Wayne had five hits and one error.

Allison Minnich pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run. Grote pitched a 1/3 of an inning and allowed three earned runs.

Karsyn Shaffer went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Alli Hill was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Cassie Cromwell was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Grote was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Jazzlyn Petry was 1-for-2 with a walk, stolen base and a RBI. Logan Tabler drove in a run and scored a run. Makayla Hanes also had a hit.

Greenville run ruled Milton-Union in five innings in the second game with Grote throwing a no-hitter. The Lady Wave scored three runs in the bottom of the first, two in the second and six in the third while limiting Milton-Union to a single run in the fifth inning.

Greenville had eight hits and one error in the game while Milton-Union had no hits and three errors.

Grote pitched the complete game, allowing one unearned run on no hits, one walk and six strikeouts.

Offensively for the Lady Wave Shaffer went 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs. Cromwell was 2-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and three RBIs. Petry was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI. Hill went 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Logan Tabler scored two runs.

With Saturday’s wins Greenville is now 2-0.
