Greenville’s Allison Minnich, Sydney Grote combine for a perfect game vs. West Carrollton

GREENVILLE – Allison Minnich and Sydney Grote combined for a perfect game as the Greenville softball team run ruled West Carrollton 11-0 in five innings on Friday.

Minnich started the game and was perfect for four innings, striking out five batters in the process. With the Lady Wave leading 11-0, Grote relieved Minnich in the top of the fifth and threw one perfect inning with two strikeouts to finish off the game.

“Keep the ball down and pound it into the ground,” Greenville coach Jerrod Newland said. “We made six or seven plays behind them. Just good stuff. Proud of both of them. It’s funny. It’s the name on the front. I know Allison Minnich has a perfect game after four. It don’t matter to us. After we got up five there Grote’s getting loose; she’s was coming if it was 4-0, 5-0. We just play for the name on the front, and that’s Greenville softball.”

The perfect game is Greenville’s second no-hitter in five games this season. Grote threw a no-hitter on Saturday against Milton-Union.

While the Greenville pitchers shut down West Carrollton, the Lady Wave offense also came up big with 11 runs.

The Wave got going in the bottom of the second when Makayla Hanes drilled a one-out triple into right field. She then scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

Greenville added two more runs in the third inning.

Alyssa York, Minnich’s courtesy runner following a leadoff walk, got the inning going by stealing second and third. Karsyn Shaffer then hit a grounder back to the pitcher, and York slid safely under the tag at home to make it 2-0.

Shaffer stole second and scored on a RBI single by Alli Hill to increase the Greenville lead to 3-0.

Greenville’s offense really got going in the fourth inning, during which the Lady Wave sent 13 batters to the plate in an eight-run inning.

Hanes got the inning started with her second triple of the game.

Grote then struck out swinging, but a dropped third strike allowed her to reach base safely and gave Hanes an opportunity to score, making it 4-0.

Running for Grote, Tess McClure stole second and third. Ashton Kester then walked and took second, giving the Wave a pair of runners in scoring position.

With two runners on, Minnich struck out but again West Carrollton dropped the third strike. That allowed all the runners to advance safely and make it 5-0.

But the play wasn’t over and Minnich kept running. As West Carrollton threw the ball to second to try to tag Minnich, Kester broke for home and scored to make it 6-0.

As Kester ran home and West Carrollton threw the ball to the plate, Minnich kept going and slid safely into third. West Carrollton’s throw to third to try to catch Minnich sailed into the outfield, and she scored to make it 7-0 – turning a strikeout in a three-run play.

“We got on a little bit, stole a few bases; they gave us a few passed balls,” Newland said. “But I like girls hustling and sliding. That one play, I’ve never seen a strikeout and that girl scored. That was really odd.”

After the bases-clearing play, West Carrollton got a strikeout for the first out of the inning before Greenville added more runs to the scoreboard.

Shaffer got things going again by walking and taking second and third on a pair of wild pitches. After Logan Tabler walked, a passed ball allowed Shaffer to score and Tabler went all the way to third.

Cromwell then walked, and another wild pitch brought in Tabler for a 9-0 Greenville lead. Two more passed balls then brought Cromwell in to make it 10-0.

Greenville then loaded the bases with back-to-back singles by Jazzlyn Petry and Hill plus a walk by Grote. Shawna Osborne hit a sacrifice grounder to drive in a run and make it 11-0 before West Carrollton finally got out of the inning.

“We run the bases hard,” Newland said of the big eight-run inning. “It’s just fun to get out and get something going like that.”

For the game Greenville had seven hits and took advantage of two West Carrollton errors plus numerous passed balls and wild pitches.

Hanes was 3-for-3 with two triples and two runs scored. Shaffer went 1-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Hill was 1-for-2 and drove in a run.

Cromwell was 1-for-2 with a walk, and Petry was 1-for-3. Minnich walked once, scored a run and drove in a run. Osborne drove in one run.

York scored two runs, Lauren Baughn scored one run, Kester scored one run, McClure scored one run, and Tabler scored a run.

Greenville is now 5-0 on the season. The Lady Wave will play host to Mason, Newton and Triad on Saturday and then will open Greater Western Ohio Conference play on Monday at home against Troy.
