Union City News: Union City community cares

0

As you may have read in previous columns, Union City is a giving, volunteering and caring community. It is evident in the caring and nurturing of Shelly and Tim King (Tim was involved in a motorcycle accident) and has been in the hospital and Rehabilitation Center for quite a while.

Shelly is the owner of The Corner Cupboard in Union City. Each day for months now, a volunteer drives Shelly to the rehabilitation center (a two-hour drive to Indianapolis) and another or maybe the same volunteer then drives her back home. This provides Shelly with the time she needs to catch up on emails, and texts and the animal shelter which she founded “PAWS.” She has continued to keep the store open with help of volunteers and some paid help, and work at the shelter for rescue dogs each morning and each evening.

Other volunteers have done yard work for her, mowed the yard, weeded and brightened the home in preparation for Tim’s homecoming which is hoped to be very soon. Now how many towns do this for their friends and neighbor’s. It is an absolute amazing thing to see the community unit.

A fundraiser to offset the expenses, has been organized by Dick and Linda Wilcox. Linda recently posted this notice: “Please mark your calendars and join us and the Firehouse Band at Firehouse Pipes on Saturday, May 21 at 6 p.m. to show our support of Tim and Shelly King. We will be raising funds to help with all the medical bills associated with Tim’s accident. Come and enjoy great music, drinks and snacks as we all show Tim and Shelly just how much Union City cares! Also the go fund me page is available to donate at http://www.gofundme.com/vrwxd45w , and several of the banks have accounts for Tim and Shelly, just ask at any Union City Bank.”

Community Clean-Up is being organized for Union City. “Union City Stellar Community Cleanup” May 14. Dumpsters will be available by the street barn to clean out your garage. We need volunteers to help make a clean sweep of the downtown or maybe your neighbor’s yard. Stellar Community t shirts will be provided to the first 100 people to sign up at City Building.

The exciting Second Saturday begins May 14 at 9 a.m. Vendors will be set up on the sidewalks. Susan Linder is the ‘leader’ of this effort, if you are interested in setting up, please contact her at 765-964-4451 to register. There is no cost involved. Several of the Union City Plein Air Painters plan to paint out that day downtown, and you can buy on the spot, original artwork for a very reasonable price! Check it out. Additionally that evening ……………..

Final notes:

On top of the Frank Miller Nature Trail at Harter Park/Union City Cemetery, the city added disc golf in the park, removed overgrown bushes/trees from cemetery and planted flowering trees. Great view… Check it out

The 2016 Union City Arts Festival is officially on Eddie Money’s website. You can purchase tickets at unioncityartsfestival.eventbrite.com unioncitynow.com eddiemoney.com

As Union City has become a community of arts, antiques and volunteers, together you can make a difference. What have you done for your community this week? Step out of the box and volunteer.
