The Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society (AWTHS) will have fall hours on the First Saturday of the month for November and December from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

The Dietrich portraits are still up to view and it’s not too early to do some Christmas shopping for the history buffs in your family – AWTHS has Arcanum area publications/books written by Anita Short and William Gunder for sale. Memberships to the society are also on sale and would make a great stocking stuffer! By purchasing a membership, you can contribute to a worthy cause and help preserve history – the society depends on memberships as well as donations to maintain their facility and programs.

Volunteers are always needed, they are the backbone of this organization donating countless hours in order to not only maintain the historical building but to keep the reference library going while preserving and educating our local history. For questions, please feel free to contact Annette Stewart or Susie Weisenbarger about using the reference library. For questions about membership, call Sharon Troutwine. Barb Deis is who you need to see for book sales or drop by during their open hours on the first Saturday of the month. Stop by and see them on Saturdays or check out their website at www.arcanumhistoricalsociety.org.

Check out the new things going on at The Old Arcana on West George Street for the fall and holiday season-who wouldn’t love to attend a Christmas Tea or a Gingerbread house class? They can be reached at 937-692-0068 or stop by for a visit and linger a while. You can also tour the historic building; browse antiques at their neighbors Smith Merchants. “October is the month for painted leaves…. As fruits and leaves and the day itself acquire a bright tint just before they fall, so the year near its setting. October is its sunset sky; November the later twilight.” ~Henry David Thoreau

“October gave a party; the leaves by hundreds came, the ashes, oaks, and maples, and leaves of every name. The sunshine spread a carpet, And every thing was grand; Miss Weather led the dancing; Professor Wind, the band….The sight was like a rainbow new-fallen from the sky…” ~George Cooper
