Versailles News: Romance and love mimic nature

0

Last weekend was Sweetest Day and even though there are many married couples that celebrate this holiday, it is most popular among those dating and not yet married. This got me thinking about romance and why some people say romance dies after marriage.

Once some women marry, they change their ideas about spending money on a romantic evening out. These women were fine before “his money” became “their money” but with the joint bank account comes new rules for how the money is spent. That’s alright because to every time there is a season and in marriage there are many seasons, and these seasons change where our money is spent.

Marriages are constantly evolving and although it may seem that romance dies, it actually grows into a much deeper intimacy. As romance disappears, love becomes more deeply rooted and overtakes the shallow superficial relationship. I liken the process to planting new grass.

You buy a grass seed mix that will promptly produce grass. Within the mixture there is quick growing grass seed that has a shallow root system but some with a slower rate of growth with deeper roots and, some that is disease and drought resistant.

Just as the perennial rye and blue grass eventually chokes out the annual grass — romantic love yields to the deeply rooted love that doesn’t worry about getting flowers, dinner out, etc. This is the couple that has built a strong and intimate bond in which they support one another in good times and in times of sorrow.

But how else could the love they vowed to one another on their wedding day have been possible? I mean seriously for better or worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, who can promise such things? In our youth we naively accept the terms and conditions of marriage, but we are too in love and too young to fully grasp the complexities and shortcomings life inevitably bestows. By keeping the author of life and love in our individual story we can be assured that “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things.” (Corinthians 1)
