Brookville topples the Arcanum wrestling team

BROOKVILLE – Arcanum began Wednesday’s wrestling against Milton-Union and went down 36-14. However, the Trojans saved their best wrestling for the final showcase as they were went down in dramatic fashion, 48-36, to the home-standing Brookville Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils were fresh off the mat as they started the tri-match off with a convincing 55-22 ambush of the Milton-Union Bulldogs.

Freshman Bailey Lawson of the Blue Devils at 106 pounds started things off with a forfeit against the Trojans for a quick 6-0 lead.

Arcanum freshman Cameron Haney took freshman James Balcom of Brookville down at 2:51 of the second period at 113 pounds for a 6-6 stalemate.

Freshman Raymond Denniston at 120 pounds pounded fellow freshman Chris Northrup at the 32 second mark of the first period to expand the Trojans’ lead to 12-6.

Freshman Ashton Macri of Brookville at 126 picked up a quick 6 for the Devils via the forfeit mark to close the gap to 18-12.

Arcanum junior Ethin Hoffman at 132 dispatched Lane Hamiel at the 1:32 of the second period to pop the score for the Trojans to 24-12.

Freshman Dylan Bruchs at 138 picked up another 6 for the Devils of new head coach Sam Sampson via the forfeit to close the gap at 24-18.

Junior Justin Vanatta at 145 pounds got pinned by sophomore Devin Meyers of Devil land at the 49 second mark of the first. This knotted the score at 24-24 as the crowd of 200 watched intently as the heavier weights progressed at Blue Devil gymnasium.

At 152 pounds, junior Alex Monnig of Brookville broke the stalemate via the forfeit route again as the score mounted to 30- 24 for the hard-charging Devils.

At 160 pounds Arcanum junior Dylan Burns burned a hole in the mat with Devil freshman Giovanni Carey with a quick pin in 27 seconds. The score now read 30-30 as Trojan nation was in full force as several matches were involved to determine the final outcome of the match.

Freshman Jack Meyers from Brookville at 170 pounds defeated freshman Cael Gostomsky of Arcanum by pinning him into the mat with six seconds to go in the second period for a 36-30 advantage.

Arcanum sophomore Dylan Rhodehamel at 182 pounds went down to fellow sophomore Chase Dyer by getting pinned with 16 seconds to go in the second.

Justin Eyler at 195 pounds for Brookville won by a forfeit for a 42-30 advantage. Following this was another forfeit for Brookville as sophomore Matthew Hamm gained another 6 at 220 for a 48-30 mark.

The final tally was decided by 285 pound Jayden Heltsley of Arcanum, who pinned sophomore Clayton Brooks at 1:41 of the second.

“We are improving each and every match as we wrestle the tough competition. We placed third at the Oakwood Invitational with Huffman, Burns and Heltsley placing high. We also competed with the big boys at the Versailles Invitational and got great mat time,” Arcanum coach Jared Beatty said.

“If we could do away with that guy named forfeit we would be doing well in our dual and tri-matches. However, the future looks bright as we have no seniors on the team at all, as we looking forward to going to Troy in early January,” Beatty concluded.
