Arcanum News: Autumn equinox

0

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, the cool crisp nights, and the warm sunshine during the day. Autumn is now closer with the Summer Season on its way out, the days are shorter, and Autumn Equinox will begin this week. Over the course of two days, Sept. 22 and 23, Autumnal Equinox will arrive meaning there is equal amount of night and day, 12 hours each. During this time the equinox is the same on each side of the equator; this is a glorious time to enjoy the outdoors. The activities of fall are always calling and here are a few things to do for fall “fun.”

The Brumbaugh family is proud to offer the entire family experience: fresh fruit, delicious desserts and family fun at their farm on the west side of the village. In the early 1960s, Winston and his young wife, Jeanie, started Brumbaugh Fruit Farm, just outside of Arcanum. When growing up in Montgomery County in the 1940s, Winston Brumbaugh was given the choice by his mother to either shovel chicken manure or pick vegetables from the garden, which his mother sold from a stand in nearby Dayton. The choice for young Winston was picking vegetables. Little did he know that this experience would develop into a life-long love for a family business. The small orchard has grown into a diverse family enterprise. Whether you are looking to enjoy the farm experience with your children or a farm market with baked goods and produce just like the good ol’ days, Brumbaugh’s tradition of entertaining is guaranteed to please. They also host many other events including weddings, school field trips, and company picnics. There is a lot to do on the property including the adventure market, corn crib, corn maze, fruit of the room, flight of fun, storybook forest, monster mountain, Grandpa’s fun acre, enchanted goat fort, and the haunted pumion dwelling. Fun Farm Hours are Saturday 11-7 and Sunday 12-7 on weekends after Labor Day through Oct. 31. Brumbaugh’s is located at 6420 Arcanum-Hollansburg Road on the west edge of town. The bakery is open daily year-round from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and during Fall Fest on Sundays from 12 to 7; they make the best apple fritters! The market is also open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the fall. If you plan to visit as a family there is no need for reservations, but to schedule a large group please contact Shane Bietry at 937-692-8084. If you want to check out their website: http://brumbaughfruitfarm.com/contact_us.html. Enjoy and have some fall fun!

The Fall Art Exhibit at Bear’s Mill is now open featuring abstract acrylic paintings by Ron Rollins and kinetic sculpture mobiles by Terry Welker. The exhibit continues through Sept. 23. All proceeds support The Friends of Bear’s Mill, Inc.; their phone number is 937-548-5112 or you can check out their website: www.BearsMill.com. Bear’s Mill is located 8 miles north of Arcanum on Arcanum-Bears Mill Road.

The fifth annual Harvest Extravaganza will be Sept. 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Country Lane Treasures, 4790 Grubbs-Rex Road, Arcanum. You’ll want to add this event to your calendar; they have 75 unique vendors featuring handmade items, antiques, collectibles and some good ole junk! They will also have food trucks to keep your energy levels going and Bluegrass music playing both days. Organizers state, “Grab your friends and neighbors, bring a lawn chair and come out and spend the day!”

The Annual Prairie Days festival will be held on Sept. 29 and 30 at Shawnee Prairie Preserve at 4267 State Route 502 West near Greenville. As festival attendants wander through the grounds they’ll hear the ring of the blacksmith’s hammer on the anvil, smell fresh bread baking in the outdoor oven and see long-hunters tending their fires in the woodland encampment. Guests can come watch as apple butter is made over the fire, play children’s pioneer games, view local artists’ works, and enjoy live music and entertainment. There will be performances by The Darke County Civic Theatre at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on the 29th and at 3:30 p.m. on the 30th. The Silver Grass Band will perform at 1 p.m. on the 29th followed by Steve Madewell’s performance at 4 p.m. Starting Sept. 30’s stage performances will be the Ramblin’ Rovers at noon. On stage at 2 p.m. will be the stories of Johnny Appleseed as he passes through Prairie Days during his journeys.
