Family and friends watched Tuesday morning as a hearse transported Dick Weherley around the track at the Darke County Fairgrounds for a final time. Weherley, who died Friday, owned Standardbred race horses and was a member of the Darke County Horseman’s Association. In 2017 he received the Horse of the Year award. After funeral services at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville, a procession of cars stopped at the Fairgrounds and watched the hearse make two laps around the track before proceeding to Mote Cemetery near Pitsburg for burial. At the 2019 Darke County Fair, a 3-year-old filly pace will be named in memory of Dick Weherley and his father, Waldo, another former race horse owner. The race in their memory will be on the first Saturday of the Fair.
