GREENVILLE – Last week, Greenville High School held its fall sports awards banquet to recognize the many athletes who competed in cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball during the fall sports season.
Each individual sport coach stepped on the stage in the GHS gym and brought his/her players to the center of the floor to be recognized and said a few words about their season before breaking off into separate groups to hand out the special awards.
“It’s always a great way to end a season by getting everybody together in one room to recognize our student-athletes,” said Dusty Yingst at one of his last events as Greenville’s athletic director. “It is a great way for our coaches to recognize their kids in front of their peers and families and even others fans that might not get to see them perform during the season. Overall, it is just a great night to finish out one season and start the next one.”
While most of Greenville’s fall sports are complete, one athlete – Isabelle Rammel – will be competing this Saturday in the Division II girls state cross country meet at National Trail Raceway in Hebron. The state meet was supposed to have taken place last Saturday, but due to heavy rains the host facility flooded forcing the postponement of the event to this weekend. It is the first time a cross country runner has qualified for the state meet in several years, according to coach Stephanie Lind.
A few other highlights from the fall sports season include the girls tennis team sending four players to the Division I district tournament. Junior Natalie Milligan and sophomore Emily Marchal qualified as singles players and seniors Marabelle Lance and Anna Manges competed as a doubles team. Also, in girls golf senior Jada Garland qualified for the Division I district tournament for the second time in her high school career. She also made it as a sophomore. The girls volleyball team had a nine-match winning streak during the season.
In addition to the special awards listed below handed out by each coach, there were a number of one-, two-, three- and four-year certificates and numbers handed out to student-athletes. Special awards for the football team will be handed out at a later date when they host their own banquet.
