American Legion members cited for years of service

NEW MADISON — A celebratory dinner was held at Post 245 in recognition of the inception of the American Legion and local milestone years of members.

James Garringer, director of The Journey Home, a veterans homeless shelter in Winchester, Indiana, serving a five-county area including Darke, was guest speaker.

He outlined the criteria for residency, the authorization recognition and partial financial support of the Veteran Administration and the need for continued support of local communities. This facility is only one of four in a pilot program throughout the United States.

Harold Hoover, first vice president and membership chairman, awarded the following certificates and pins to Chester Banks and Steven Swab, five years; Joe Eliker and Ronald S. Rexrode, 10 years; Roy Flatter, 15 years; Clarence Baker and William Marburger, 20 years; Neil Zimmers, 25 years; Robert Downing, 35 years; Duane Miller and Barry Tinkle, 40 years; Robert Mitchell 45 years; and Gary Eley and Rodney Hill, 50 years.

Auxiliary Membership Chairman Karyl Eubanks and President Dorothy Shively recognized the following members: Amanda Behee and Marian Eley, five years; Helen Hoover, 15 years; Betty Rhoades, 25 years; Della Cassity, 30 years; and posthumously, Mary Elsie Jenkins, 25 years.

A thank-you was announced to Brian Jones for his donation of the ham that was served along with a bountiful carry-in dinner. The spirit of fellowship was enjoyed by all who attended.
