GREENVILLE — A typical Wednesday at Wayne HealthCare became less typical for one registered nurse in the hospital’s Perioperative Services department.
Becky Faber, of Arcanum, a 26-year employee at Wayne, was named the second DAISY Award winner of 2017.
She described herself as “shocked” upon being greeted by members of the hospital administration bearing carts filled with gifts, flowers and foods.
“I’m just very appreciative of the award, very honored to receive it,” she said. “I love what I do. I love working as a nurse. It’s a very rewarding job.”
When asked what has kept her at Wayne for more than two decades, Faber credited the community.
“The community, the people I work with, the people I work for, the patients, it’s just a wonderful community,” she said.
Angie Lakes, Wayne’s Director of Perioperative Services, said Faber’s award was “much deserved.”
“Becky is a special person, who gets along well with patients, families, coworkers, physicians,” said Lakes. “She is very much deserving of this and comes in every day with a smile and a good attitude. If she’s having a bad day, she never brings it to work with her. She always is putting other people first.”
“She’s kind of like an unsung hero. She comes in, works hard, and does her job, and does it with a smile on her face, day in and day out,” she added.
ICU nurse Rose Hall, Wayne’s first DAISY Foundation Award winner, awarded in May, brought the hospital’s DAISY Award banner for Faber to sign.
DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem,” and the foundation was started by the family of Patrick Barnes, who died of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura. The care he received from his nurses during his illness touched him and his family, who afterward established the non-profit foundation to honor nurses around the world.
The award is given to a nurse whose clinical skills and compassionate care, exemplify the kind of nurse that patients, their families, and hospital staff recognize as an outstanding role model.
Faber was nominated for the award by the wife of a former patient, who said Faber’s care went above and beyond what her duties required as her husband was recovering from surgery.
Wayne’s Vice President of Patient Care Kim Freeman said she and Faber have worked together almost 17 years, and said the hospital is “proud” she is on their team.
“When this nomination came in, it did not surprise me, to be honest,” she said. “Because I know what kind of nurse Becky is and she demonstrates this just not for that patient, for that particular day, but she does that day in and day out, with every patient.”
