ARCANUM – Arcanum Council opted for a familiar name to fill a council vacancy, swearing in Vanessa Delk to return to her previous seat vacated Jan. 1.

Delk was a member of council and intended to run for reelection, but her petition was rejected by the Darke County Board of Elections, and she did not appear on November’s ballot.

Her term expired at the end of December, and council asked her to stay on to fill the seat until a replacement could be found. Letters of interest were submitted to council, and Delk also expressed a desire to fill the seat. Council conducted interviews among those who expressed interest in the seat and opted to return Delk to the position.

Mike Bruns attended to present to council estimates and details for street reconstruction, under a recent Community Development Block Grant. He also spoke of the waterwater project, the next step of which will be boring for soil analysis. He recommended and council accepted a bid of $5,500 from Alt and Witzig for the work.

Matt Bolin of nCourt also was in attendance to present a proposal for payment processing services. The service would allow the village to accept credit card payments for taxes and utility bills at no cost to the village via in-person payments, online, mobile or phone.

Mayor Judith Foureman recommended holding off on discussion of any water rate increases until council had the opportunity to look over the number. With other recent fee increases, Foureman said she felt council should not raise rates unless the numbers bear out an absolute need for it.

In other business, after committee assignments were confirmed, Council Member Julie Willis commented that she did not get the committee assignment she requested. When asked if he would like to reply, Council President Monte Clark stated that he did not. Willis then replied, “I knew it. It’s personal.”
