NEW MADISON — Ground was broken Monday morning at the site of Family Health Services’ new medical building at 101 Anderson St. in New Madison.
“Family Health applied for a capital improvement grant last June or July through Health Resource Services Administration (HRSA) to build in New Madison, ” said Family Health Director Jean Young. “We were awarded $1 million…$1.25 million is the value of the building, with Family Health paying $250,000 as its share.”
Young said Family Health will be paying for the cabinetry and sinks.
“We bought the trailer [out of which the medical staff is currently working] two winters ago, when Dr. Sherry Adkins came to practice,” Young said.
Young said Adkins is a graduate of Arcanum High School.
“She is a local girl whose father lives in New Madison, and she wanted to practice in the New Madison area,” Young said. “Dr. Idris moved out of the area and left seven years ago, and we needed a doctor here.”
According to Adkins, the patient load in New Madison in 2015 was 1,243, with 3,246 visits, of which 1,095 were Medicaid patients.
“This is a Medicaid practice,” Young said.
The lot where the medical facility will be located was given to Family Health from Wayne HealthCare, who owned the house and land.
“The hospital gave us that lot, then we bought the car wash and it was torn down,” Young said. “The little house beside us came up in foreclosure and we bought it at a nominal fee. It will be taken down for parking space and a driveway for the safety of our patients coming into and leaving the area.”
The new facility, which will look similar to the Arcanum medical facility also owned by Family Health, will feature six exam rooms or be similar to one suite at the main office in Greenville.
Working at the New Madison facility in addition to Dr. Adkins, are nurses Bev Burkhart and Sara Weaver as well as office receptionists/billing clerks Chelsea Riegle and Rita Barger.
Family Health’s nurse practitioner, Mickey Ferguson, is at the New Madison facility on Wednesdays.
“We will hire another provider after construction is finished,” Young said.
Brumbaugh Construction has been hired for the project.
“We hope we’re in by the fall of 2016 but no later than January 2017,” Young said.
Family Health also has medical facilities in Versailles in addition to Greenville, Arcanum and New Madison.
