Jerry Springer slams GOP, Trump at event

GREENVILLE — Thankfully, no chairs were thrown nor guests restrained by security guards when television personality and former Cincinnati Mayor Jerry Springer spoke to local Democrats at the Darke County Democratic Spring Gala at VFW Post 7262 in Greenville Wednesday.

Springer is the longtime host of “The Jerry Springer Show” talk show, which began its 25th season last September. The so-called “tabloid talk show” is famous, or infamous, for controversial topics, fights among guests and “bleeped out” language.

In addition to his television career, Springer is a noted activist for Democratic Party candidates and issues. He said he devotes two days a week to “helping the Democratic Party around the country, particularly here in Ohio, because this is where my roots are.”

Springer spent most of his time during the program addressing the 2016 presidential campaign, and in particular, the Republican candidacy of New York businessman Donald Trump.

Calling the rise of Trump “inevitable,” Springer said, “A generation of Americans have been raised to hate their government. To hate Washington. To distrust all politicians.”

He added, “It was inevitable. Now we didn’t know it would be Donald Trump, but we should have known that at some point with all hate Washington, hate the government, say horrible things about [President] Barack Obama…our parents never would have stood for us talking like we talk about Obama, about the president of the United States…I would say that’s almost unpatriotic.”

Springer hit at Trump’s business background, saying, “I don’t care how good you are, or not, at business. Business has nothing to do with being in politics. Because in business, the motive is profit. In government, the motive is service.”

The talk show host also took swings at the GOP majority in Congress.

“When this election is over, let’s be honest, we’re still going to probably have a right-wing Republican Congress,” he said. “We all know that this Congress is incredibly right wing, in fact you all know it better than anyone. You had the Speaker of the House [John Boehner] knocked out. You would think that he was conservative enough. Even he wasn’t right wing enough for his party and they kicked him out.”

“So we know we’re going to have a right-wing Congress,” he said. “This is what I ask you to talk to your friends about, when they’re wondering who to vote for. We Americans cannot afford to have a Republican president this time. Even a ‘responsible one [like Ohio Gov. John Kasich].’”

“No Republican president in his first term is going to be able to veto this Republican Congress, because if he did, when you run for reelection, your primaried out,” Springer told The Daily Advocate. “And no president in the 20th Century has been reelected if he is challenged by a serious candidate in the primaries — either party. So therefore a Republican president would not have to veto this Congress.”

Springer’s speech was enthusiastically received by those in attendance, and the talk show host, now 72, shows little sign of slowing down. As for the future of “The Jerry Springer Show” itself, Springer joked, “I’ve let NBC know that I will be stopping when I’m 104, because I want to be able to enjoy my retirement.”

“I’m lucky I don’t have to make a living anymore,” he added. “I do it just because its fun. I can’t come up with another reason.”
