Senior citizens have proms, too

DARKE COUNTY — Many Darke County folks had the opportunity to kick up their heels at a couple of senior citizen proms this past weekend.

Some of them were seen at both places — Palestine Church of Christ and the Greenville Eagles Lodge.

The first Senior Prom was held on Sunday evening and was dubbed “A fun evening for the Young at Heart in our community.” The second one was hosted by the Treaty City Seniors at the Eagles on Monday afternoon.

Spittin’ Image provided the music as they have for all of the Palestine bashes and Tom Everhart is always the deejay for the Treaty City Seniors. Everhart was also in attendance at the Palestine prom and was asked to perform with the twins who comprise Spittin’ Image, Blain and Brian Swabb. He played tambourine on one song, and accompanied Spittin’ Image on “Mustang Sally,” when he, Gary Myers and Herb Saylor performed their “Ride Sally Ride” musical lines from that song.

The prom at Palestine, an invitation only event, featured a homemade meal, a king and queen contest and lots of dancing.

The Treaty City Seniors always meet each Monday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge, and Organizer Lynn Newbauer thought it would be nice to hold a prom, so she did. Featured there were also a king and queen contest, dancing and food.

Named king and queen at Palestine were Don Brode and Ernestine Cloyd while king and queen at the Eagles were Judy Rowland and Ron Benning.

This was the 11th year for the free prom at the Palestine church.

Roxanne McEldowney wanted something for the Young at Heart class at the church to do. And, Kay Jones of Ansonia suggested a senior prom.

“Thirty-five people signed up and 70 came,” said McEldowney. “It has grown from that. One hundred thirty-five was our biggest crowd and now it’s by invitation only. This year we were expecting 134 and approximately 120 attended.”

McEldowney, Jones, Janet Clemens and Barbara Swabb prepare the meal that is served. Helping them out this year with the prom were Stacy Flatter, Alan Ayette, Jim and Marla Renner, Deanna Jones and Steve Hetzler.

Yes, most of the attendees at both proms dressed for the occasion and made it even more special.

Among the many on hand for the prom at the Eagles Lodge was Tina McClanahan of Brookdale Greenville, which sponsored the weekly event. Prizes were given away there as well.
