COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Voters in western Ohio can begin casting early ballots in a special election being held to fill the vacancy left by former House Speaker John Boehner (BAY’-nur).

Republican Warren Davidson faces Democrat Corey Foister and Green Party candidate Jim Condit Jr. in the June 7 special election and the November general election. The winner of next month’s contest will complete Boehner’s term.

Boehner first won the congressional seat in 1990 and resigned last year. His heavily Republican 8th House district spans six counties containing northern Cincinnati suburbs, working-class cities and long rural stretches.

Open seats have been rare in recent years in Ohio.

Davidson, an Army veteran and businessman, emerged from a 15-candidate field in the GOP primary in March.
