Open air dance deemed successful

GREENVILLE — Person Centered Services (PCS) Inc., formerly Wayne Industries, hosted an open air dance Friday night at its facility at 5844 Jaysville-St. John Road.

PCS, a sheltered employment workshop, welcomed the public as well as individuals from the facility to attend. However, it was decided to hold the event indoors because of the warm temperatures.

Thus, lawn chairs were brought inside for the festivities.

Deejay Tom Everhart entertained with his music the first half of the event, and Harmony Quartet, the second half. Harmony is comprised of Bruce Shank, Bill Drew, Terry Longfellow and Mike Royer.

Once again, the dance floor was hardly ever vacated with most everyone, including PCS Executive Director Heather Fritz King [soon to become Heather Voisard] and other staff, dancing the night away with many of those who attended the dance.

Cost of admission to the three-hour event included a grilled hamburger sandwich, chips and soft drink with all proceeds going to Empowering Life Without Limits, a non-profit organization that helps plan vacations for PCS’s individuals. Consumed were 198 hamburger patties.

Highlights of the evening included the arrival of “Elvis” as well as an appearance and a performance by “Tina Turner.”

Louise Drew, who drove school bus for Wayne Industries for 23 years, was glad she got to see Jeanette Hensley, a former passenger on her bus.

At one point in the evening, $1,100 had been collected and staff members were proud of that. Someone donated $500 anonymously.

Staff is expecting to raise $10,000 this year to make those dream vacations come true.

“Parents can go with the individuals,” someone said.

In a recent interview, King said PCS has 98 individuals in the building and 104 altogether, with home personal care offered to those in their homes.”

Services at the local facility focus on career development, volunteering, pre-vocational development, community integration and everyday living skills. These are all interwoven in the fabric of each day’s programming.

This facility helps people volunteer and helps those who are not quite ready to go into the work force to help them with pre-vocational skills.

There are seven programming rooms at PCS plus a workshop and cafeteria.

Its service delivery system is designed for adults with ID/DD regardless of age or level of need.
