DARKE COUNTY — Arcanum High School grad Andrew Buck Michael added an Emmy Award to his collection during an awards ceremony held by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The awards presentation was held August 6 at the Lawrenceburg Event Center in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Michael, who goes by his middle name “Buck,” is a meteorologist at WSYX, ABC 6, in Columbus, Ohio, and its sister station, WTTE, Fox 28, also in Columbus. Before joining WSYX/WTTE, he worked at stations closer to home, WKEF and WRGT, in Dayton, Ohio.

A member of the American Meteorological Society, Michael is a 2004 graduate of Arcanum and received his Atmospheric Science degree from Ohio State University.

His 2016 Emmy Award, presented for his “Social Buzz With Buck” segment, is Michael’s second. His first was for Weather Segment for a weather special called “Safe From The Storm” that aired back in 2013.

“My award was for the Interactivity category for the Ohio Valley Emmy Awards,” he said. “So it was clips of me using social media and interacting with viewers on-air and online seamlessly. Ten or 20 years ago, people would turn on the TV and they would watch the news and weather and that was that, but now they can interact with that person.”

“So if anyone wants to interact with me, my Twitter account is @AndrewWSYX6 and my Facebook is ‘Andrew Buck Michael,’” he added.

Michael says growing up he spent a “lot” of his time in New Madison going to church and working at Fort Black Buffet during high school, saying, “Both communities are near and dear to my heart.”

“I still often visit my parent’s farm back in southern Darke County. I am now also married to my darling wife, Dawn, and we have a 1-year-old daughter named Summer Rain,” he said.

Accepting his award onstage, Michael first thanked his wife and co-workers, then told the audience, “With this award, with interactivity, it obviously has to go to the viewers. Because every morning when I did Social Buzz, they were there, interacting with me, and without them interacting, I wouldn’t be able to win this, so thanks to all the viewers out there, and thanks to God.”
