‘Truck driver’ top June, July job

DARKE COUNTY — “Truck driver” was the most advertised job opening in western Ohio during June and July, according to statistics recently released by Ohio Means Jobs.

From June 14 through July 13, a total of 16,711 job openings were posted through the state’s employment website. Of these, there were 1,054 ads posted for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.

Not surprisingly, the top certifications required among all posted ads were “Commercial Driver’s License” and “Driver’s License.”

The report shows other in-demand occupations include retail salespeople and supervisors, registered nurses, maintenance and repair workers, customer service representatives, software developers and industrial engineers.

Top job advertisers during the period included Kettering Medical Center, Bob Evans Farms, Inc., Premier Healthcare, and CRST Dedicated Services.

The western Ohio region includes Auglaize, Champaign, Clark, Clinton, Darke, Fayette, Greene, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Shelby Counties. Among these counties, Darke (3.7 percent) and Mercer (3.1 percent) have the lowest unemployment rates based on July figures from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the State of Ohio as a whole reflected a 4.8 percent unemployment rate for July, dropping from 5.0 percent in June and 5.1 percent in May.

Though demand for workers remains high and unemployment is relatively low, Ohio Means Jobs also reports an overall decline in the number of job advertisements posted for the western Ohio region, with a decrease of 264 ads from the previous reporting period. Compared to the same time period from a year ago, this reflects a decrease of 3,398 posted ads.
