DARKE COUNTY — Starting Tuesday, Jan. 17, military veterans living in Darke County will be able to obtain special identification cards issued by the Darke County Veterans Service Office.
Tom Pitman, department head, says the cards will be issued at no cost to honorably discharged veterans living in the county. The primary purpose of the card is to aid businesses in identifying those who qualify for military discounts.
The cards, similar in appearance to a driver’s license, will feature the veteran’s photo, branch of service and date of discharge, among other information.
To get a card, a veteran living in the county must first go to the Darke County Recorder’s Office to have their discharge paperwork recorded there. The veteran then will need to schedule an appointment with the Darke County Veterans Service Office to come in and have their card made. At that time, he or she must present their discharge papers and one form of identification bearing the veteran’s photo.
The card expires 10 years from its issue date, and then a new one will be issued. A veteran can also be issued a new card in the event his or her ID is lost or stolen.
The card, however, cannot be used for official government purposes, such as obtaining services from the Veterans Administration.
Pitman said the office will be issuing the cards on an appointment basis only for the time being, and reiterated that veterans first must have their discharge recorded at the Recorder’s Office before scheduling an appointment.
