WAYNE LAKES — A Village of Wayne Lakes Council Meeting took place Feb. 13.

The Council approved to have a 2017 Catfish Tournament, on Father’s Day Weekend, in June.

In addition, Certified Fishing Instuctor John Winger and board members of “Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs” Bob Farmer, Gabe Petho and Doug Bickley were there to discuss the upcoming event. The popular fishing event will take place all Wednesdays throughout June and July. While it is fun, the event teaches lessons, such as personal safety, responsibility and fishing fundamentals, Winger said.

“We have already had many phone calls about it,” Winger said. “Last year, we had 515 kids in eight weeks and probably 250 parents. We are planning on having the fish fry at the end of June and a pizza party at the end of July, if any of you feel like you would like to join us. I hope we can make a difference.”

“If you read the paper about all of the overdoses in the county, this event is more important than ever,” said Wayne Lakes Mayor Gary Lee Young.

Some concerns were brought up about people fishing in the lakes without a license. Young said to turn them in to the village and they would get a $50 fine.

“We didn’t collect any last year,” Young said. “Surprisingly, nobody fished without a license. We tell everyone in the village to look out for that.”

A discussion took place about an easier way for folks to get fishing permits. The village is going to sell them at the Darke County Sheriff’s Home & Sports Show, April 7 – 9 and at First Friday, in Greenville, April 7. It will also be selling raffle tickets for a golf cart fund-raiser for the upgrading of the beach concession stand, at both events. Due to the upgrade of the concession stand, two ladies are are taking 30 hours of on-line Food Service Manager tests to be compliant with the Darke County Health Department.

In other news, some complaints were made about grass being too high on someone’s property. Another was made about dogs barking constantly and the dog owner allowing the dogs to live in horrible conditions.

In old business, the village had received $680 for repairs to the damaged guard rail.

“Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs!” the popular Wayne Lakes fishing event will take place all Wednesdays throughout June and July, from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Registration takes place between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Last year 515 kids attended in eight weeks.
