Comedy show to help with trip

DARKE COUNTY — Darke County Veterans Services Commission has sold the last two seats for veterans planning to go on the 56-passenger charter bus trip to Washington D.C. Sept. 28 through Oct. 1.

“But, we are going to do a standby list in case of cancellations,” said Department Head Tom Pitman. “Fifty-three veterans and spouses are signed up now.”

The trip, he said, is not limited to any branch of the service or wartime period and includes National Guardsmen.

This trip is an opportunity for county veterans to visit the World War II, Korean and Vietnam Memorials at a significantly reduced cost.

“The majority going are Vietnam vets and they mostly want to see the military memorials and are interested in a White House tour,” Pitman said. “We are trying to get a Pentagon tour and a White House tour set up. On our way back, we will stop at the Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania.”

Additional stops on the trip include the Air Force Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, the Holocaust Museum, and Arlington Cemetery where a wreath will be placed by Darke County at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Other stops on the tentative itinerary are the National Mall, the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, National Museum of American History and the Bureau of Engraving and printing,

This trip is open to all honorably discharged Darke County veterans and their spouses. The out-of-pocket cost for each person is $250 for a four-day, three-night stay.

In support of the bus trip, he said the Darke County Veterans Services Commission will be hosting a comedy show featuring nationally recognized comedian, Greg Hahn, a Marine Corps veteran and regular guest on the Bob and Tom Radio Show on Comedy Central.

The comedy show will be at the Greenville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7262 on May 27. All proceeds from ticket sales will be used to support the 2017 Veterans Washington D.C. trip.

Tickets are $20 for general admission and $30 for VIP admission.

Pitman will also be making the trip to D.C. as will two other Veterans Service Office staff members Cindy Bruner and Var Gehron.
