GREENVILLE — What started in 2010 as a fundraiser among a few friends, has become an extravaganza so large it barely fits in one building. Bunco 4 Boobies had its eighth annual event March 26 at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge.

President of Bunco 4 Boobies Jessica Artz said there were 306 registered players. The room was full of pink: hair, shoes, clothing, glasses, hats, cake and decorations. The event was bittersweet, as guests enjoyed food, drink and Bunko enter-twined with some heartfelt memories and information about cancer.

“We are really a bunch of girls trying to do the right thing,” Artz said. “The original event was for a friend in a small Bunco group. It was our night to get away from our responsibilities of being a mom. One of our friends in the group was diagnosed with breast cancer and we decided to have a Bunco 4 Boobies fundraiser for her. Six weeks later, we had our first annual Bunco 4 Boobies at Longfellows, in Greenville.

“We had no idea what we were doing,” Artz said. “We had two rooms of two groups of people. We raised about $5,000. Our friend didn’t want all of the money. We gave some to her and donated the rest to the Cancer Association of Darke County. We helped them both and people kept saying, ‘That was fun – let’s do it again’. Here we are doing it again. It has grown and evolved into something that none of us ever expected. In the last seven years, we have raised almost $133,000 for the Cancer Association. I know because of our support, the Cancer Association has been able to increase their services.”

The Executive Director of the Cancer Association of Darke County (CADC) Christine Lynn thanked the group at the Bunco 4 Boobies event. According to Lynn, the Cancer Association serves the following communities this year on its active files: Ansonia, Arcanum, Bradford, Burkettsville, Fort Recovery Gettysburg, Gordon, Greenville, hollansburg, Ithaca, New Madison, Laura, New Weston, Osgood, Rossburg, Union City, Versailles, West Manchester and Yorkshire.

“You probably aren’t aware of the difference you make in peoples’ lives who are battling cancer and need a little bit of support,” Lynn said. “In the last fiscal year we (CADC) provided benefits totaling more than $113,000 to cancer patients here. It is not because of anything we have done, it is because of you and people like you who are willing to give. That makes the difference. This organization began in 1995, and we have been able to give more than $1 million since that time. We are very grateful.”
