Memorial services planned all over Darke County

DARKE COUNTY — With Memorial Day approaching next weekend, plans are made for services at various cemeteries across the county.

The American Legion Honor Guard will be at Greenville Township Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 8677 State Route 118, at 3 p.m.on May 28 for a Memorial Day commemoration. The public is encouraged to attend.

Also on May 28, services will be conducted in Van Buren and Twin townships. Van Buren Township Memorial Service will be held at the Abbottsville Cemetery at 1 p.m. and Twin Township Memorial Service will be held at the Ithaca Cemetery at 2 p.m. At both services, Greenville High School NJROTC members and Arcanum High School band members will be performing the services. The addresses will be presented by Larry Harter, member of the Pitsburg Trinity Lutheran Church.

Memorial Day services at Teegarden Congregational Christian Church will also be May 28. Ansonia American Legion will conduct special services in the cemetery at 10:30 a.m. to honor veterans, with the remainder of the service being held inside the church. Pastor Eric Knight will be speaker.

Stelvideo Memorial Day service will be held at 1 p.m. May 28 at the Stelvideo Christian Church. David Bloomfield will be the honored speaker. He served this nation from 1976-80 in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Marine musician and has directed the Stelvideo Church band for several years. Special music for the service will be performed by the church choir. At 2 p.m., American Legion Post 140 will conclude by conducting a memorial service at the Stelvideo Cemetery.

Post 245 American Legion New Madison Memorial Day activities May 28 ceremonies are as follows: Otterbein Cemetery, 11 am., Fort Jefferson Cemetery noon and Greenmound Cemetery 2 p.m. Retired Air Force Chaplain the Rev. Joe Hannah will be the speaker. The auxiliary will be serving lunch at the post located at 242 Fayette St., starting at 11 a.m. On the menu are sandwiches, desserts, coffee and cold drinks.

It was noted that Oak Grove Cemetery is located on State Route 121 south of Fort Jefferson. The memorial day service will begin with Laroy Farst Post 245 of the New Madison American Legion presenting the colors. The invocation and benediction will be given by Reverend Steve Shoop. Special Music will be provided by Julie Lemon. The New Madison Boy Scout Troop #149 will place the memorial day wreath. The guest speaker will be Mike Stegall. In case of rain, the service will be held in the Fort Jefferson United Methodist Church.

Memorial Day services for Bradford and surrounding communities are: Greenville Creek Church, 11 a.m. May 28 and Bradford Harris Creek Church, 1:30 p.m. May 28 with no parade.

May 29, the Hollansburg Niles Richards Post will present a ceremony at Palestine Cemetery at 10 a.m., at Longtown Cemetery at 11 a.m. and Hollansburg Cemetery at 1 p.m. followed by a carry-in picnic. Post will provide meat and buns.

Memorial Day services in Versailles will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. May 29. The parade will form at 11 a.m. at the Vets Club at the corner of south center and West Wood streets on State Route 185, then north on Center to Main Street to the corner of West Street, north to Greenlawn Avenue then west to the cemetery where the patriotic and other services will be held. The parade will pause at the Swamp Creek bridge where the flower girls will cast flowers into the creek on the downstream side. The program will continue at the cemetery, with Dr. Vivian Blevins speaking.

Union City’s Memorial Day service will take place May 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who have a float, antique or unique vehicle, golf cart, motorcycle or a group or organization and would like to join the parade line-up between 9:30 and 9:50 a.m. with the parade starting at 10 a.m. It will travel west on Pearl Street to Columbia then north to Oak Street then west on Oak to the cemetery. The service will follow at 11 a.m. at the monument. Romer’s Bar B Que chicken will be served after the service. Pick -up will be at Harter Park (weather permitting) and at the American Legion at 409 W. Pearl St., Union City, Indiana.

Highland Cemetery services will be May 29 with parade at 1:30 p.m.

The following weekend, Memorial Day Services are slated for Franklin and Monroe townships. Franklin Townships service at Newcomer Cemetery will be at 1 p.m. June 4 and the Monroe Township service at Mote Cemetery will be at 2 p.m. on June 4.
