GREENVILLE — The trial of two men scheduled to begin Tuesday morning in Darke County Common Pleas Court was canceled as all charges against the two were dismissed.

Jason L. Hunt, 24, of New Paris, and Kevin D. Canan, 51, of Rossburg, were due to be put on trial for a number of felony charges. Hunt was charged with one count of attempted aggravated burglary and two counts of felonious assault, all second-degree felonies. Canan faced a single second-degree felony count of complicity to attempted aggravated burglary.

According to court documents, the two, among a larger group of others, reportedly went to the residence of a Bradford woman on January 16 to search for a person they suspected of stealing marijuana, money and a firearm from Canan. A male at the residence was reportedly struck in the face twice by one of the men, who was wearing brass knuckles. The windows of two vehicles on the property were broken during the incident. Upon learning law enforcement was being notified, the men departed.

Hunt has a prior felony conviction, being sentenced in 2014 to three years in prison for aggravated burglary.

When asked why the state decided to drop the charges, Darke County Assistant Prosecutor Jim Bennett said, “When preparing for the trial, additional information came to light which made convictions and prosecution of the case impossible.”

Canan was represented in court by defense attorney Alex Pendl. Defense attorney Dave Rohrer represented Hunt.
