Sloopy’s ribbon-cutting celebrates grand opening

GREENVILLE – Michelle and Mike Weaver, of Arcanum, Ohio are owners of a second bar and grill, Sloopy’s, in Greenville.

The business was formally welcomed into the community August 19, with a Darke County Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting. Chamber President Sharon Deschambeau, her husband President/CEO of Wayne HealthCare Wayne Deschambeau, Greenville Mayor Steve Willman, other chamber members, customers and employees of Sloopy’s were present.

“On behalf of our members and our board, we welcome you to the chamber family and we are so glad that you decided to open a business here,” Sharon said. “Every business is important, and you are contributing to the economic development of Darke County. Thank you Mike and Michelle.”

“This is a wonderful place and everyone is glad to be here,” Mayor Willman added. “I know it’s going to be a great business. Congratulations.”

The Weavers are no strangers to proprietorship, as they also own Duckfoot’s Bar and Grill, on the south side of Grand Lake St. Marys, in Celina. Between the two businesses, the Weavers employ about 20 people. Mike said his wife encouraged the purchase of Duckfoot’s about two years ago.

“We camped on the lake and always went into Duckfoot’s,” he said. “Michelle always liked it and said, she would love to have it if it was ever available. Operating Duckfoot’s has given us valuable experience in the food service and entertainment industry. When we had an opportunity to expand into our home area, we knew the time was right.”

The name Sloopy’s came from a bar in Dayton’s Oregon District that the Williams enjoyed, Mike said. He wanted a regional-type feel, with “Hang on Sloopy” by the McCoys, being the signature song of the The Ohio State University marching band.

“We wanted something generic that didn’t pigeon-hole us into one type of place,” he said. “This is for families, people who ride motorcycles, sports nuts – anybody can come here and have a good time in a great environment.”

Michelle and Mike took possession of the former Hot Rod’s and Harley’s Sports Bar and Grill, August 1, and started the Sloopy’s re-branding process. In addition to a new menu, which consists of some typical pub fare, of sub sandwiches, burgers and pizzas, some specialty items include: shrimp quesadillas, deep- fried burritos and a dinner menu with New York strips, rib-eyes, marinated bourbon sirloins, Winner’s marinated pork chops and some pasta dishes. Sloopy’s will also offer high- quality entertainment, of live music, special events, bar games, leagues and sporting events. Mike plays guitar for the band “Whiskey Bizness”, who has been playing in the location for a long time, he said. The band was ironically scheduled for Sloopy’s grand opening night, long before the Weavers owned it. When Mike is not playing in the band or working in his restaurants, he is an engineer, in Dayton.

“It’s pretty much me running both bars from open to close right now,” Michelle said.

Sloopy’s is open Monday – Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sundays at noon. Michelle said time will dictate the closing hours. For now, they are thinking of staying open until 2:30 a.m., and will gradually expand hours to offer full-service breakfast for the early risers and third- shifters that are hungry after a long night, she said. Sloopy’s is located at 1240 E. Russ Road, Greenville, 937-548-0019. More information can be found on Sloopy’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Sloopys-106555133355933
