GREENVILLE — Jim and Sherry Ward were honored as “Republicans of the Year” for 2017 during the Darke County GOP’s annual hog roast held Sunday at the Darke County Fairgrounds.

The pair received commendations from the Darke County Board of Commissioners; Senator Matt Huffman on behalf of the Ohio Senate; Representatives Keith Faber and Steve Huffman on behalf of the Ohio House; and Greenville Mayor Steve Willman on behalf of the City of Greenville.

“It is certainly my honor to be a Republican, particularly in this day and age,” Jim Ward said, thanking the group for the honor. “We have a Republican president who’s trying to ‘drain the swamp.’ I’m very fortunate to reside in a heavily Republican county.”

The Wards are Greenville residents who have served the party in a number of ways, including the county’s Men’s and Women’s GOP clubs and the GOP Central Committee.

The event’s keynote speaker was Jane Timken, chair of the Ohio Republican Party.

“[The year] 2016 was an awakening and a shift in Ohio,” she said. “We had over one million new Republicans come into our party in May 2015. That shift has made a big difference in Ohio. And part of my job is keeping those one million new Republican voters voting for Republican candidates up and down the ticket.”

A number of GOP officeholders and candidates were also on hand to greet constituents and speak at the event. These included: U.S. Representative Warren Davidson; Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, who is running for the Ohio governorship in 2018; Rep. Steve Huffman, who is running for the Ohio Senate and his GOP opponent Gene Krebs; Sen. Matt Huffman; Rep. Keith Faber, who is seeking to become Ohio State Auditor; and Travis Faber, J.D. Winteregg, Susan Manchester, Aaron Heilers, and John “Bud” O’Brien, all candidates for the Ohio House, among others.

Former Ohio Representative Jim Buchy also spoke, asking Republicans to vote against Issue 2 in the general election this November 7.
