GREENVILLE — The Greenville Fire Department welcomed two new firefighters to the department and also saw two current members promoted in rank during a swearing-in ceremony held Monday at the Greenville Municipal Building.

Various family, friends and fellow firefighters gathered at the Greenville City Council chambers to witness the four firefighters take their oath of office, presided over by Greenville Mayor Mike Bowers.

The department’s two newest firefighters — Rick Fennell and William Swisher — were sworn in to fill positions left open by the retirement of firefighters Capt. Lowell “Chip” Fashner and Michael Hohler.

Fashner’s retirement became effective on September 12. He began his career with the Greenville Fire Department in 1990, and was promoted to captain in 1993.

Hohler is retiring his firefighting position effective September 30. He has been with the department since 1993.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Lt. Kevin Subler was promoted to captain and firefighter Shannon Fritz was promoted to lieutenant.

Subler has been with the department since 2000 and was first promoted to lieutenant in 2011. He will replace the retired Fashner as captain.

Fritz was appointed to the department in 2000 and will replace Subler as lieutenant.
