Driver transported by CareFlight after falling asleep at the wheel

NORTH STAR – A driver was airlifted by CareFlight after being injured in an accident caused by falling asleep at the wheel.

At approximately 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, emergency personnel from North Star Fire Department, Ansonia Rescue and CareFlight along with deputies from the Darke County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 14000 block of U.S. Route 127 in North Star in regards to a semi versus car injury accident.

According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Department, a 2012 silver Chevy Cruze driven by Edward Whittaker, 53, of Versailles was traveling southbound on U.S. Route 127 when it collided with the rear end of a 2007 white Volvo semi tractor and trailer driven by driven by David Hoskins, 55, of Greenville, who also was traveling southbound and slowing down to enter North Star.

Whittaker was awake and able to speak with witnesses and first responders when crews arrived on the scene. Deputies reported that he admitted to the possibility of falling asleep while driving home from work.

Whittaker was treated on the scene by Ansonia Rescue before being flown to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight for his injuries. His condition is unknown at this this time. Hoskins was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Department.
